La huelga general convocada por el frente común de la CGTP-IN y la UGTP, ha tenido, en palabras del Secretario General de la UGT, "un impacto extraordinario". Los sindicatos cifran en tres millones de trabajadores las personas que han seguido la huelga, sobre los cuatro millones y medio de trabajadores ocupados en el país. Transportes, aeropuertos y puertos, educación, salud y justicia han sido los sectores prácticamente paralizados, pero la Administración pública ha seguido masivamente la huelga. El sector privado ha resultado menos afectado, aun en niveles importantes de participación.

La huelga general convocada por el frente común de la CGTP-IN y la UGTP, ha tenido, en palabras del Secretario General de la UGT, "un impacto extraordinario". Los sindicatos han afirmado que se trataba de la "mayor huelga" de todas las épocas en Portugal. De hecho hacía 20 años que no se convocaba una acción de protesta de ámbito general. El posicionamiento a favor de la huelga de la izquierda política - el PCP, el Bloque de Izquierdas - junto a un cierto sector del Partido Socialista, está dando alas a un movimiento de resistencia que progresivamente se está definiendo como antitético con una "clase política" incapaz de resistir a los movimientos especulativos de los mercados.
Habrá que seguir de cerca los resultados que esta huelga pueden inducir sobre el cambio de políticas exigida al gobierno portugués y que se condensa en la discusión parlamentaria de los presupuestos para 2011.
